The ADFA Guards Inline Hockey Club has long been a quiet achiever within the ADFA sporting community. In the past two seasons the club has taken out two premierships in ACT third grade and one premiership in ACT second grade competition. In the 2006 season we also took out second place in third grade and the minor premiership in second grade competition. In any given season the club will field two teams of junior players in third grade and two teams in second grade, one of which will be the Firsts team. The club currently fields around 40 players every season. In terms of commitment, players can expect to train for 1 hour on Tuesdays and play 1 game per week on either Monday or Thursday depending on their grade. And unlike larger clubs, every player is guaranteed a game every week.
The Guards is also unusual within the ADFA community as it is run exclusively by cadets. Every year, the club qualifies a number of senior players as coaches who are then assigned responsibility of a team for the season. This approach to running the club makes us a tight knit team because new players have the opportunity to interact with experienced players, right from the start of their playing career. The club is run on an administrative level by the senior committee, made up of five senior players who are then assisted by the junior committee.
As well as the regular playing opportunities offered to players, the club also offers other opportunities to its members every year. In 2006 the club sent a representational team to compete in the New Zealand University Games in Wellington - an event we hope to make a permanent fixture in the Guards calendar. The club also qualifies a number of people as referees each year. All these features make the Guards inline hockey club an exciting club to be a part of while at ADFA.
