During the first few weeks, Midshipmen and Officer Cadets from outside the Australian Capital Territory are invited to join the Foster Family Scheme. This scheme will introduce them to serving and retired military Officers and Warrant Officers living locally who will provide a home-away-from-home environment to assist in the settling-in process.
There are three Chaplains at the Academy representing the Navy, Army and Air Force. They cater for the needs of all military personnel at the Academy, as well as those living and working within the local area.
Spiritual and personal development is encouraged at the Academy, and the Chaplains seek to engage with cadets and staff in a proactive manner both on campus, and in a variety of single Service, field training and leisure environments. They provide a confidential pastoral counselling service both during the working day and out of hours.
As part of the Military Training Program, the Chaplains conduct workshops in Character Development and Character Guidance for all Midshipmen and Officer Cadets (cadets). They also conduct a two day exercise for cadets at the end of their second year at the Academy.
The Psychology and Counselling Service at the Academy is a resource available to all Academy cadets and military staff. Each of the psychologists at the Academy is fully qualified with extensive experience working with Service personnel.
The ADFA Psychologists provide assistance with personal counselling for difficulties such as adjusting to the Academy; making the transition from school to university level study; stress management, relationship counselling, emotional difficulties and vocational advice.
The ADFA psychologists also provide assistance to Midshipmen and Officer Cadets when they are referred by a staff member.
The University of new South Wales also provides a range of academic support services for Midshipmen and officer Cadets.
