Learn to be a leader

Officer Cadet Barron Platen

At ADFA we work and study in a military and a civilian environment, so we learn to lead as officers in the ADF, and within our professional careers.

Our university studies open us up to other organisational styles, to management studies, and to civilian case studies. They help us think more critically about leadership.

"ADFA is about taking the opportunity that is available to you."

Our divisional staff and the military officers who train us demonstrate the inherent characteristics of good leaders. They are the best examples we have, and they hold us to high standards in our studies, our training and our personal lives. We learn through their example and develop the characteristics which inspire us to follow them.

ADFA offers a range of leadership opportunities within sporting and extra-curricular clubs, and within each division. These experiences teach us that skills like time and project management are just as important as words of command, and that it is essential we learn how to manage people as well as how to operate within a dynamic military environment. Wearing rank doesn't make us good leaders. We need to mould ourselves to be the best we can be so that we can lead others in service of our country.

I believe leadership is within the individual. ADFA gives us the opportunity to nurture that ability - to get the most out of ourselves and each other, and learn how to best use our own talents.
