Challenge yourself with unique experiences

Major Michelle McGuiness

ADFA encourages cadets to join team and individual sporting clubs, and to volunteer for interest and activity groups. ADFA has more than 30 cadet clubs, including the precision drill team, theatrical production, debating, triathlon, fencing, and dragon boat racing.

Cadets also do adventure training such as mountaineering, skiing, caving, rock climbing and canyoning, as well as activities within each Division, like paintball, surfing and abseiling. From a staff perspective, these are important for team bonding and personal development.

Each year around 40 high performing cadets also have the opportunity to visit an overseas military academy. ADFA also encourages cadets and staff to visit sites of significance to the ADF, in Australia and overseas.

"ADFA provides unparalleled opportunities for exciting, challenging and rewarding experiences."

I had some fantastic experiences as a cadet at ADFA. A highlight of my second year was the opportunity to participate in a week-long adventure training activity near Barrington Tops. A small group of enthusiastic yet amateur canoeists, we paddled by day and camped by the river at night. While I was at ADFA I also had the opportunity to spend two weeks in Indonesia. I was able to meet some of our counterparts in the Indonesian military, and have been travelling with the ADF ever since.
