Living with people from all over Australia and from all three Services was sometimes challenging, but I wouldn't give back a second of the experience.
Your mates teach you the qualities of character and the loyalty and respect it takes to be a true leader, and the challenges you face together make bonds of friendship stronger. The friends I made at ADFA now form the backbone of my professional network.
There are always a lot of laughs and good times, but you really discover what you're made of when you're challenged, and ADFA has no shortage of obstacles for you to overcome. Leadership Challenges and adventure training were definitely highlights, but so was the challenge of every ADFA Rugby Union match! Being Captain of the ADFA Rugby Club also allowed me to develop a leadership style which motivated people both on and off the field.
The personal qualities I developed while at ADFA helped me to enter the workforce as an effective team member and have a positive influence on the people around me. My own leadership style is a combination of the program delivered by military experts, the example set by Divisional staff, and the lessons learned through years of managing through influence - without rank, without authority, but with confidence in my own ability to lead.
