Learn from lecturers at the top of their fields

Officer Cadet Lee Carruthers

One of the best things about studying at UNSW@ADFA is that the lecture and tutorial class sizes are a lot smaller than at a civilian uni - some of my classes have at most five people.

"The high teacher to student ratio is more effective for learning. I pay more attention and I'll be better at my job because of it."

The lecturers are very approachable and willing to help you understand the subject matter, which I believe is a direct benefit of the high teacher to student ratio. The facilities are also excellent, in particular the laboratories and library which are both quite extensive. The library caters for a wide range of resources across academic and military studies, and I also utilise a number of computer labs which are always available to us.

I really enjoy the practical side of my courses, for example building concrete steps and model bridges, as well as actually going to a property and surveying the area. In particular, in the civil engineering subjects we learn about different materials and processes of application that we will actually get to use when we graduate.

This approach to teaching, combined with work experience both at RAAF bases and in civilian placements, has given me a much better understanding of my future career.
