Before attending ADFA I studied at a civilian university in Melbourne. It was common for many of my mates, and myself, to work two jobs just to earn enough money to get through the week.
When I looked into joining the ADF I found out I would get paid to study, which made a big difference to my lifestyle. Having my tuition and all textbooks paid for by the ADF was a great bonus. It also means I have less debt than my civilian friends, some of who are repaying over $30,000 in tuition fees for their degrees.
Now I'm working full time as an Administration Officer at RAAF Base Williamtown, using my degree and pursuing a career in the Air Force. Because of the money that I saved at ADFA, I have holidayed in Europe, and travelled to Sydney, Darwin, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Brisbane. I'm also going to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos at the end of this year.
Having my tuition and textbooks paid for and being paid to study has given me far more financial freedom. It really gives you a head start after university.
