Commandant ADFA

The Commandant is responsible to the Commander of the Australian Defence College for the control and management of the Academy. The Commandant is either a Navy Commodore, Army Brigadier or Air Force Air Commodore.

Brigadier Wayne Goodman, AM

Wayne Goodman was appointed Commandant ADFA in January 2008. He commenced his military career at the Officer Cadet School in Portsea, graduating to the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery in 1983.

He has served in a variety of gun line postings, and commanded 107 Field Battery and the School of Artillery in Puckapunyal.   He has held instructional appointments at the Royal Military College, the United States Army Field Artillery School, and the Australian Command and Staff College; and staff positions within Army Headquarters, Strategic Operations Division and Military Strategic Commitments.  He also served on operation in Malaysia as a rifle platoon commander with 3 RAR, as an operations officer with the UN special commission for Iraq, and as the Australian liaison officer in the US ARCENT Headquarters in Kuwait.

He is a graduate of the Australian Army Command and Staff College and the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies.  He has a Bachelor of Professional Studies, a Graduate Diploma in Strategic Studies and a Masters of Defence Studies.

Brigadier Goodman and his wife Kathleen have two daughters and a son.  His interests include golf, bike riding and following Australian Rules Football.

Deputy Commandant ADFA

The Deputy Commandant is responsible for the military education and training of the Midshipmen and Officer Cadets.

Captain Peter J. Murray

Commandant Captain Peter J. MurrayPeter Murray joined the Australian Defence Force Academy as the Deputy Commandant in January 2006. His career in the Royal Australian Navy spans 33 years, following his initial training as a junior entry Cadet Midshipman in January 1974 at the age of 16. Captain Murray is a Principal Warfare Officer who has specialised in anti submarine warfare.

He has had sea postings in a variety of ships and has served as the head of Navy's Sea Training Group, Commander of the Australian Amphibious Task Group, the Training Authority for Maritime Warfare and Director of Navy Business Improvement in Navy Headquarters. Prior to commencing at ADFA he was the Maritime Component and Amphibious Commander for Operation Astute, Australia's military contribution to Timor Leste.

Captain Murray has instructed military officers at the United States Naval Academy, the newly formed Australian Defence Force Academy when it opened in 1986, and the Navy Staff College.

His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science from the University of New South Wales and a Graduate Diploma in Management from the University of Central Queensland.

Executive Officer Cadets

The Executive Officer Cadets is responsible for the day to day administration, discipline and command of the Midshipmen and Officer Cadets and other military personnel undertaking full-time tertiary study at the Academy.

Commander Michael Reis

Michael Reis posted to the Australian Defence Force Academy in August 2007. He joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1982, graduating from initial training with the RNZN Navigation Prize. He completed bridge watchkeeping training in HMA Ships Yarra and Canberra, culminating in the award of his professional seaman qualification in 1985.

He has served as an Air Intercept Controller, Principal Warfare Officer, Direction Officer and Executive Officer on ships including HMA Ships Derwent, Sydney, Brisbane and Newcastle. He saw service in the Red Sea as part of the Multi National Force, on Operation Trek in the Solomon Islands and the initial stages of Operation Relex off northwest Australia. He has also deployed to the Middle East as the Deputy Commander Joint Operations Liaison officer to Central Command - Forward.

His shore postings include Fleet Direction Officer and Director of Maritime Communications and Information Systems, both at Maritime Headquarters, and Head of Command and Tactics in Training Authority - Maritime Warfare at HMAS Watson, where he received a Chief of Navy Commendation.

Chief Instructor

The Chief Instructor is responsible for delivering military training that gives Midshipmen and Officer Cadets the knowledge and skills, and promotes the values and attitudes, required by the three Services. This is achieved through delivery of the ADFA Military Education and Training program and coordination of the Single Service Training program.

Lieutenant Colonel Shaun Whitehouse

Lieutenant Colonel Shaun Whitehouse was appointed Chief Instructor ADFA in January 2008. He graduated from the Royal Military College (RMC) in 1990 and is a member of the Royal Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Lieutenant Colonel Whitehouse has fulfilled a range of Army appointments including training appointments as a Platoon Commander at the 1st Recruit Training Battalion and an Instructor at RMC, where he was awarded a Commander Training Command – Army Commendation. He has operational experience as a UN Military Observer in Israel and Syria, and commanding Intermediate Staging Base in Kuwait during Operations Bastille and Falconer. He was also awarded a Commander Australian Theatre Commendation for his contribution to Operation Catalyst.

Lieutenant Colonel Whitehouse is married to Jen and they have two children. He is an avid AFL follower and spends most of his spare time following his children around a range of sporting activities.

Academy Sergeant Major

The Academy Sergeant Major is responsible for the maintenance of military standards of discipline, dress and bearing by all uniformed personnel, and the provision of advice on the Defence Force Discipline Act and ceremonial matters.

Warrant Officer Peter Evans

Warrant Officer Peter Evans was appointed Academy Sergeant Major in January 2008. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force, as an electrical fitter trainee in February 1977 at the age of 17, and was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer as a Warrant Officer Disciplinary in October 1996.

Warrant Officer Evans has had postings as a Warrant Officer Disciplinary at Air Force Headquarters, RAAF Base Glenbrook, RAAF Base Richmond, Air Command WOFF at HQAC, No 1 Recruit Training Unit, No 92 Wing and Aerospace Operational Support Group.

Warrant Officer Evans has deployed to the middle east on operation Catalyst and Slipper in 2004 and 2006/07.
