Hello and welcome to the Shedden Papers.
These papers have been written by CDSS Course Members, as well as the occasional guest and staff member, as contributions to the discourse on defence and strategic studies issues in the Asia-Pacific region. The Course Member contributions are papers written as part of the coursework during the 11-month long CDSS course.
These new publications in the Shedden Paper series cover a diverse range of topics, and they demonstrate a strong awareness of strategic and defence issues in the region. Two of the papers were submitted as coursework in 2011; one being an Australian Army officer’s analysis the role of the ASEAN Regional Forum and the other being an astute analysis of the situation in Southern Thailand written by a Thai officer. Two papers were written by Australian civilians. I have written a paper on the nature and purpose of Professional Military Education, and one of the CDSS Visiting Fellows considers the benefits of long-term contracting between Defence and the Australian Defence industry. We are also delighted that the former New Zealand Deputy Ambassador to Australia allowed us to publish his appreciation of the relevance of the lessons of the Peloponnesian Wars for modern states.
Views expressed in the Shedden Papers are solely those of the individual authors. They are not necessarily those of their governments and should not be considered as the official endorsement of factual accuracy, opinion, conclusion or recommendation of those governments or departments. They should be construed only as the author's own personal opinion.
I trust you will enjoy and appreciate these papers, and will consider bookmarking the CDSS Shedden Papers page.
