Mr Jamie Cullens
Mr. Jamie Cullens / Director

Jamie served in Infantry after graduating from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1976. His military career consisted of command (platoon, company and regiment), staff and training postings and included a two year posting with the US Army's Rapid Deployment Force in 1989-90. He saw operational service in Kashmir with the United Nations and on Operation 'Just Cause' in Panama with US forces; attended Army Command and Staff College in 1988; and, commanded NORFORCE in the Northern Territory and Kimberley regions of Australia in 1994 - 95.

He joined the Rio Tinto resources group in 1996 as a line manager and worked in Northern Australia in the areas of mine production, business improvement, environmental management, safety, community relations and Native Title until 2001.

Jamie was appointed as the first Director of the Centre in 2002.
Operating as an implementing 'think tank', the Centre supports the development of command, leadership, management and military ethics programs in the Australian Defence College courses and across Defence. In 2005 the Centre worked with the Singapore Armed Forces in developing their operational leadership programs. The Centre also developed and continues to deliver the One/Two Star Operations (OBOE) course for the Chief of the Defence Force and the command and leadership component of the Navy Command and Army Major's promotion courses. The Centre commenced leadership development activities for Air Force in 2011.
He was the Secretary of Defence Scholar in 2008 and he authored a study on military ethics and the ADF requirements for education in this field. The study was endorsed by the Chiefs of Service Committee in May 2009.

Jamie holds BA (UNSW) and Masters (UNSW) degrees and a Graduate Diploma in Management.
Other interests include struggling through triathlons, reading, gardening, rugby union (watching), and Northern Australia.

CMDR Joseph Kempton
CMDR Joseph Kempton / Deputy Director

Commander Joseph Kempton joined the Royal Australian Navy in July 1989 as an Undergraduate Entry Instructor Officer. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1991 he completed the New Entry Officer Course in 1992, followed by his Instructor Application Course. He was initially posted to HMAS CERBERUS, where he undertook both instructional and training development duties.

On promotion and posting from CERBERUS, Lieutenant Kempton undertook a range of training duties in HMA Ships KUTTABUL, PENGUIN and WATSON. In 1998 he was posted to Maritime Headquarters into the Fleet Training Liaison Agency, where he co-ordinated training deployments through the fleet. During this posting he undertook a review of LPA training to ascertain the viability of conducting training at sea; as a result of the review he was posted to HMAS MANOORA as the Training Manager. Whilst posted to MANOORA he participated in OP Trek and First of Class Flight Trials. Whilst posted to MANOORA he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander

In 2001, Lieutenant Commander Kempton was posted as Staff Officer Projects in Canberra. This was followed by postings to the Directorate of Naval Officers' Postings, where he undertook a range of postings. In 2006 he undertook the Australian Command and Staff Course. In Jan 2008 he was posted as the Officer-In-Charge of the Training Support Services at HMAS WATSON. He was posted back to fill a short notice position within Naval Officers' Postings. He completed a Masters of Maritime Studies in 2008.

In 2009 Lieutenant Commander Kempton deployed to HQ JTF 633 for seven months. On return he was posted as Personal Staff Officer to the Deputy Chief of Navy. On promotion to Commander in 2011 he was posted as the Deputy Director Centre for Defence Leadership and Ethics.

WGCDR Peter Gilbert
WGCDR Peter Gilbert / Air Force Leadership - Officer

Wing Commander Pete Gilbert enlisted as a Clerk Admin in July 1985 in Albury / Wodonga. Postings following initial training, included; RAAF Support Unit Canberra, Office of the Chief of the Air Staff, Base Squadron Fairbairn, Defence Force Recruiting Albury, and Air Force Headquarters Materiel Division.

He was commissioned as an ADMINO in July 1995 and proceeded to RAAFCOL to complete the 16 week Junior Officer Initial Course, where he was awarded the Course Leadership Prize and the Australian Defence Industries Leadership Sword for the Most Outstanding Graduate of 1995. A posting to 76 Squadron was followed by tours at 41 Wing Headquarters and No 3 Squadron at RAAF Williamtown. He returned to Canberra in Nov 2000 to take up duties within the Directorate of Personnel Officers - Air Force. In 2001 he was promoted to Squadron Leader, and in 2003 was posted to Headquarters Defence Force Recruiting as the Senior Marketing Officer.

In 2005, he transferred to the RAAFGR and pursued employment in the marketing communications industry as a consultant with Richardson / O'Rourke consulting and an Account Director with George Patterson Y&R advertising. However, the opportunity for further RAAF service beckoned and he transferred back to the PAF in 2006 to undertake duties at the Australian Defence Force Academy as Officer Commanding Air Force Squadron in 2007 and No 1 Alpha Squadron in 2008.

In May 2008, he returned to Headquarters Defence Force Recruiting and was granted acting Wing Commander rank as the Deputy Director Military Recruiting Support (DDMRS). His duties as DDMRS included the provision of Admin, Finance, Personnel and Logistics support to the Headquarters and 16 Defence Force Recruiting Centres located around Australia. During this period he was deployed on Operation SLIPPER as the J10 HQJTF633. He was promoted to substantive Wing Commander on return from operational deployment in April 2010.

In March 2011, Wing Commander Gilbert was posted as the initial appointee to the position of Air Force Leadership Officer within the Centre for Defence Leadership and Ethics, Australian Defence College.

Wing Commander Gilbert holds a Bachelor of Business and Post Graduate qualifications in Marketing. He is a keen golfer, and enjoys surfing, bike riding and music.

Dr Rebbeca Wade-Ferrell
Dr. Rebbeca Wade-Ferrell / Organisational Psychologist

Dr Wade-Ferrell has worked as a psychologist in a variety of private and public organisations since 2001, including as a private consultant and as an academic. She completed her Post doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology in 2008, with a research dissertation on the experience of homicide. Prior to her engagement with Australian Defence College, Rebecca was employed with the Forensic Mental Health Service in Tasmania, providing specialist psychological services for offenders who have a mental disorder and mental health expertise to the Tasmanian Court System.

Her role with Defence is to undertake applied leadership and ethics research, assist in the development of Joint Leadership Development programs, deliver lectures and prepare discussion papers on psychological aspects of human performance on Operations and the psychology of leadership and to conduct leadership coaching for individuals and groups.

Rebecca's areas of speciality since her appointment have been the design and implementation of Emotionally Intelligent leadership development programs, leader wellness education, coaching and mentoring advice and training, the co-ordination of the ADC 360 degree feedback programs and specialist lectures She is the VCDF representative on various working groups regarding Women in Defence and gender diversity in education.

She holds a commission and has 15 years of military service with the Australian Army Reserve to date.

WOFF Darcy Henriksen
WOFF Darcy Henriksen / Air Force Leadership - Airmen

Warrant Officer Darcy Eric Henriksen was born in Bundaberg in 1951 and joined the Royal Australian Air Force in October 1968 as a Supplier. His service career spans 24 years Permanent Air Force, 4 years Continual Full Time Service and 5 years Active Reserve. He discharged from the Royal Australian Air Force in 1988 and then completed 15 years in Civilian Industry with an International Service Company, Rentokil Pty Limited and Smith's Motor Company (Robina Holden). Warrant Officer Henriksen re-enlisted to Permanent Air Force in January 2008, and has of January 2012 transferred to the Active Reserve.

During his service career, Warrant Officer Henriksen was posted to Base Squadron Williamtown (warehousing), 2 Squadron (Canberra SQN) Amberley, Headquarters Support Command Melbourne (electronic data processing), No 1 Stores Depot (specialised packaging), Movement Control Office Melbourne (surface air movement control), and Air movements Butterworth, Air Movements Richmond (assistant warehousing officer), Air Movements Fairbairn (Movements Officer), 27 SQN (Reserve) Logistics and Movements support, 23 SQN (Reserve) Movements support , HQAC (Log/Mov Policy) Glenbrook, HQ1JMOVGP (Contracts & Desk Officer), Surveillance and Response Group (SRG) (Group WOFF) , and The Centre for Defence Leadership and Ethics (CDLE) Air Force Leadership - Airmen.

The highlights of his service included receiving a Certificate of Outstanding service for his contribution to safety and work efficiency, serving with 2 Squadron on operations in Papua New Guinea, Biak and Butterworth during 1973-75, and his successful selection and appointment to Executive Warrant Officer, Headquarters Surveillance and Response Group on 12 January 2009.

His civilian career saw him employed within the service and motor industries gaining middle and executive level management experience. The highlight of his career as a manager in the service industry was being voted by his peers and the company executive as Australian Branch of the Year, while winning the Queensland sales competition 2000-2001 award in the motor industry gave him the prestigious honour of carrying the Olympic Torch in Mackay Queensland.

Warrant Officer Henriksen is married to Dianne, and has two sons, a daughter-in-law, grandson and granddaughter: Steven, Wendy, Rhys and Mia, and Michael. He and his wife enjoy travel (Grey Nomads), grand/gran moments, and tennis.

Dr. Nick Jans
Dr. Nick Jans / Visiting Fellow

Nick Jans, Ph.D., is a soldier, a scholar, and a management consultant. A graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon (Class of 61), he served in the Australian Regular Army in field artillery, training, and personnel policy development. He later became a senior lecturer at the University of Canberra and then a management consultant. He currently holds visiting fellowships at both the ADC's Centre for Defence Leadership & Ethics and the School of Business, UNSW, Canberra. His research interests include leadership, followership, organisational culture, leadership culture, career development, and employee commitment and engagement. He was an adviser to the US Army in its recent Campaign for the Military Professional Ethic, and a team member of the 2011 ADF Personal Conduct Review.

WO1 Kevin Woods
WO1 Kevin Woods

Warrant Officer Woods commenced Recruit Training in Jan 1974 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. After completing Initial Employment Training he was posted to the 10th Independent Rifle Company at the Jungle Training Centre Canungra. In 1975 he was posted to the 5th 7th Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment where he served as a rifleman, Section 2IC, Section Commander and Sniper Section Commander in Sniper Platoon.

He was promoted to Sergeant in 1981 and posted to the 2nd Training Group as an Instructor. After serving two years he was posted back to the 5th 7th Battalion and served as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant and the Reconnaissance Platoon Sergeant.

In 1986 he was promoted to Warrant Officer Class Two and posted to the Land Warfare Centre Detachment Singleton as an Instructor. He was then posted back to the 5th 7th Battalion and served for two years as a Company Sergeant Major.

He was promoted to Warrant Officer Class One in 1990 and posted to the Royal Military College Duntroon and served as the Wing Sergeant Major Field Training Wing. In 1992 he was posted to the School of Infantry as an instructor and then appointed the Regimental Sergeant Major of the School of Infantry.

Warrant Officer Woods was posted in 1994 as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 49th Battalion The Royal Queensland Regiment. After serving two years he was posted to the Land Warfare Centre as an instructor at Warrant Officer and Non Commissioned Officer Wing. In 1998 he was posted as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 3rd Brigade which also included the Brigade deployment to East Timor.
In January 2000 Warrant Officer Woods took up his appointment as the Regimental Sergeant Major Training Command Army. In January 2003 he took up the appointment of Academy Sergeant Major, Australian Defence Force Academy.

Warrant Officer Woods is married to Denice and they have two children.
Warrant Officer Woods was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major Army on the 19 December 2003. Warrant Officer Woods retired from the regular army on the 29 February 2008.
