WHAT’S NEW

WE HAVE MOVED AND CHANGED OUR NAME

As of late May 2009 the centre has moved from the ADC Weston site to ADFA.  All existing command and control arrangements remain unchanged.  The centre has also been renamed the Centre for Defence Leadership and Ethics (CDLE).

THE ANNUAL CDF WO AND NCO LEADERSHIP FORUM, 01-02 OCT 09

The Centre is pleased to announce that planning has begun for the annual ADF WO and NCO Leadership Forum, currently programmed to occur 01-02 October 2009.  The forum will be held at the Australian Defence College, Weston Creek and is developed and facilitated by the three Service Warrant Officers and the Centre.

This is the seventh forum to occur, and will seek to continue to encourage discussion, debate and critical examination of leadership issues in the enlisted ranks.    The forum will receive an opening address from the CDF, Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston and include a formal dinner, traditionally attended by the Chiefs of Service.

Further details of the event, including how to nominate to attend, will be released in the near future.

NEW GENERATION NAVY

CDLE is very excited to be involved in the leadership and ethics development efforts being undertaken as part of the NGN program.  CDLE staff are actively working with the RAN in the fields of sailor and officer leadership and ethics training and education.

RELEASE OF THE ADF JOINT LEADERSHIP DOCTRINE – ADDP 00.6

The new ADF joint leadership doctrine was released in December 2007.  The aim of ADDP 00.6 is to guide the development of leadership in the ADF. It describes the basic leadership tenets, principles, behaviours and considerations necessary for leadership in the ADF. While well founded leadership principles are included, the document’s purpose is to inform current military thought rather than present dogma for rigid application.

ADDP 00.6 is for all ranks interested in leading in the military. In particular, it is for individuals in their initial leadership role. It will also be useful for others wishing to broaden their understanding of the application of leadership in the joint, coalition and inter-agency environments.  The doctrine focuses on leadership. Although a distinction is drawn between leadership and the concepts of command and management, the inter-relationship between these three concepts is not explored in depth.  The doctrine focuses on the two major functions of leadership, namely leading people and leading the organisation. Under these headings the doctrine examines values based leadership, the principles for leading people, the effects of leadership on ADF culture, leadership development and the role of leaders and followers.
