video and intelligence processing for enhanced reconnaissance and surveillance (VIPERS)
VIPERS provides timely actionable intelligence by extracting the important events and activities of interest from video sources and reduces them to text. Manual monitoring of 24x7 video is a boring, mundane task that is non-productive and an inefficient use of valuable resources. Many events and activities of interest are often missed and it is extremely labour intensive to go back and review the acquired video to locate them. VIPERS uses leading-edge detection, tracking and analysis algorithms to intelligently process video and extract out events and activities of interest, converting them to a textual representation for presentation to a local or remote operator.
VIPERS applications:
- critical infrastructure and asset surveillance (power, water, communications)
- surveillance of key facilities and buildings (governmental, corporate, embassies)
- port and harbour surveillance (wharves, docks, sheds)
- targeted surveillance applications (residential houses, warehouses, buildings)
- general unattended surveillance
VIPERS technology benefits:
- manpower reduction: through the automated detection of events
- faster response time to alarm events: automation allows the operator simply to determine the activity significance and act accordingly
- easy generation of patterns of activity: through storage of textual descriptions over time
- reduced storage and management requirements: targeted filtering of activities or events means only associated video is stored
- low communications bandwidth: video can be reduced to still images or video snippets
- compatibility with centralised monitoring: the video supplied to the VIPERS can be from any video source

Unattended Ground Sensor (UGS) systems provide significant force multipliers, reducing human exposure to danger. UGS systems are cost-effective and provide 24-hour, day and night surveillance. Sensors can be deployed at remote insertion points, choke points or mobility corridors. Using a combination of fused sensor data - including seismic, infra-red (IR), visible, magnetic and acoustic - a UGS system reliably provides high probability of target detection.
