RDS and drop box inserted into driveline

regenerative drive system (RDS) technology

Permo-Drive's technology strategy, based on extensive modeling and physical testing of the earlier prototypes, is to develop a technology based on the insertion a hydraulic pump/motor via a drop box into the vehicle driveshaft and controlled by Permo-Drive's electronic management system. Pre-production systems will be available from November 2004.

For production systems, three options will be available initially for light, medium and heavy vehicles. The component selection for each application will be derived from the results of modeling and simulation work using Permo-Drive's hybrid hydraulic vehicle model and from physical test results from the extensive trials.

DescriptionPertinent information

Permo-Drive Technologies Ltd (Permo-Drive) has developed and patented a hydraulic regenerative braking and drive system (RDSTM) that adapts commercial off the shelf, hydraulic technology integrated with its proprietary electronic control system to harness previously wasted braking energy in vehicles.

The Permo-Drive hybrid hydraulic regeneration technology provides potential improvements in three areas:

  • fuel savings (with corresponding emissions reductions) by providing replacement power to the driveline, thereby reducing the net fuel use of the vehicle
  • improved secondary braking plus a significant reduction in brake wear for the vehicle's primary braking system
  • alternatively the stored energy can be used to improve vehicle initial acceleration.
