P3 Orion structural life extension and deeper maintenance skills

Australian Aerospace has developed processes and tooling to allow the confident repair and replacement of P3 airframe structure. The developed techniques are extremely cost effective, even on a one-off basis in extending the life of aging P3 aircraft. The processes were proven during the implementation of RNZAF Project Kestrel.

The innovation which assures the outcome of such major structural change is:

  • the utilisation of laser alignment processes
  • the design of specialist tooling
  • a highly skilled and motivated workforce
  • the engineering and logistic/spares support capability and
  • all work is based on OEM design data.

To complement the design capacity of the facility Australian Aerospace is a Lockheed Martin-accredited P3 Orion Service Centre with a strong teaming relationship with the OEM and other companies involved in significant maintenance of P3 aircraft.
