Maritime
Overview
Ship construction, components manufacture and overhaul, maintenance and repair, training and integrated logistics support.
The Australian naval shipbuilding and repair sector is a key element of the Australian defence industry base. Australian industry has a proven track record in the construction, integration, modification and support of naval vessels and the design and integration of many of the sub-systems within these vessels. Australia built, and now operates, the world's most advanced conventional submarines. This has resulted in the establishment of an advanced skills base in submarine systems development, integration and high-pressure hull fabrication.
Australian maritime industry constructs, exports and supports high-speed vessels and patrol boats.
The ANZAC Frigates and HUON Minehunters, constructed and integrated in country, are further testaments to the depth and quality of Australia's naval shipbuilding capabilities.
Australian industry is currently preparing to undertake the construction of state-of-the-art air warfare destroyers and amphibious support ships for the Royal Australian Navy, Australia's largest and most complex shipbuilding project to date. This is a reflection of Australia's internationally competitive shipbuilding and fit-out capabilities. Australia's leading maritime industry environment has produced world class naval capabilities including:
- ship construction - both aluminium and steel, including submarines;
- modular fabrication;
- systems integration;
- platform integration;
- sub-system design, development and integration
- maintenance services;
- patrol boat design and construction; and high speed vessel design and construction
