Design, manufacture and support of specialist military vehicles, development of military-unique equipment
Australia's rugged terrain and harsh operating environment mandate a requirement for military vehicles able to withstand rough treatment while conducting demanding missions. Australia has adapted and improved overseas designs of armoured fighting vehicles, such as M113 and ASLAVs, to accommodate the requirements of military operations in the operating environments likely to be encountered by Australian land forces.
Capabilities such as blast protection, rugged suspension, troop comfort, long-range endurance and the ability to operate in hot, dry and dusty conditions, are some of the requirements that are fundamental to military vehicles designed and adapted for Australian service by Australian defence industry.
Australian industry designs, develops and manufactures a range of specialist military equipment to meet the operating needs of the Australian Army and is engaged in the development of future soldier combat systems.
Australian industry also has a significant munitions and small arms manufacturing capability.
