Executive Summary

Naval Ship Management (Australia) Pty Ltd (NSM) is an incorporated joint venture between Babcock Australia and United Group Infrastructure. NSM will provide ship repair and maintenance services for the eight Royal Australian Navy ANZAC-class frigates over the next five years under the Warship Asset Management Agreement (WAMA).

The Australian industry capability activities that relate to the WAMA contract are:

This is not an exhaustive list but an indication of the activities to be undertaken. Although work and supplies are delivered nationally, the majority of the work is split between Fleet Base West and Fleet Base East.

The approximate value of the WAMA contract is $340 million, incorporating an approximate Australian contract expenditure of $273,159,000 and a local industry activity value of approximately $248,479,500

Those Australian companies involved in the WAMA contract are given the opportunity to register for NSM supply chain, the Technical Support Network (TSN).

The benefits of being registered with the TSN are:

  • opportunities to access national and global supply chains through the NSM parent organisations
  • participation and mentoring in a supply chain improvement program support by NSM parent organisations.

NSM supply chain manager will also be responsible for the management of AIC within the contract and:

  • ensuring AIC targets are communicated to the project team, and incorporated into the detailed project planning process and supply chain activities
  • optimising the use of cost-effective Australian industry options and investigating opportunities to increase AIC
  • undertaking and managing continuous improvement activities relating to Australian industry capability.

Scope of Future Work Opportunities

Although involvement of Australian industry within the WAMA contract is 98%, there may be further opportunities for Australian industry to be involved in the following areas:

  • maintenance support
    • provide shore services
    • safety systems
    • services and repairs
  • supply support
    • management of government furnished material
    • obsolescence management.

NSM acknowledges that our capabilities are built upon a strong and diverse supply chain and intend to maximise Australian industry’s ability to participate in the Warship Asset Management Agreement through coordinated road shows and industry briefings promoting any future work opportunities.
