ADF Member's Guide

ADF Salary Packaging

With salary packaging you can pay for some items or services from your pre- or post-tax income.

You can salary package computers, cars, childcare and superannuation. This may reduce your taxable income and put more money in your pocket.

You can convert up to 100% of your salary. This can include your service allowance.

Who can apply for salary packaging?

You can apply for salary packaging if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces, or
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service.

What do I need to know before I sign up?

Before you sign up, talk to a finance advisor. This is especially true for larger items such as a car or extra superannuation contributions.

You may have to pay fees which are more than the amount you save. These fees may be for setting up an account, administration, fringe benefits tax and superannuation taxes.

Your salary before packaging determines:

  • your superannuation contributions and benefits
  • any compensation payments, and/or
  • final entitlements on separation from the ADF.

Salary packaging will not change the other amounts you must pay; for example, child support payments.

More information about salary packaging can be found on the Smart Salary website and on the ATO salary sacrificing superannuation website.

Important information

As the name suggests, this Member's Guide is designed as a guide to help you understand how your pay and conditions work. It is not a legal document. Therefore, if there is any conflict between the Member's Guide and Defence Determination 2016/19, Conditions of Service (and the Determinations made by the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal), as compiled in PACMAN, PACMAN is the authority.
