Short absence from duty

You may get short periods of absence for special circumstances.

Who can get short absence from duty?

You may get short absence if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces, or
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service.

When can I get short absence from duty?

You may get short absence from duty if you need short, informal time off duty. It can be used for situations where other kinds of leave may not be available or appropriate. It doesn't accrue.

You may also get short absence from duty if you already have additional recreation leave for an activity, and your decision-maker believes you need more time to recover.

What should your decision-maker consider?

Your decision-maker should consider whether you need short absence from duty:

  • to rest and recover from long or unusual duty, or
  • to attend to urgent personal matters.

When can't I get short absence from duty?

You may not get short absence from duty if you have other leave you could use. This includes recreation leave or other paid leave.

When should I take short absence from duty?

If your short absence from duty relates to a Service event or activity, you must take it as soon as possible. You can't save your short absence from duty for another occasion.
