Australian Government Parental Leave Pay

The Australian Government's Parental Leave Pay gives you financial support to help you care for a newborn or recently adopted child. It is a government scheme which is separate from Defence's maternity, adoption and parental leave provisions.

Who can get Parental Leave Pay?

You may get Parental Leave Pay if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service, or
  • Reserves on Reserve service.

How much Parental Leave Pay can I get?

You may get up to 18 weeks parental leave. You can get Parental Leave Pay while you are on maternity or parental leave from Defence.

Your partner may also get Dad and Partner Pay for up to two weeks.

How do I get Parental Leave Pay?

You may submit your claim for Parental Leave Pay up to three months before the expected birth or adoption date.

You can submit the claim up to 52 weeks after your child's birth or adoption. To get the maximum 18 weeks, you must submit your claim within 34 weeks.

You must be away from work to get Parental Leave Pay.

You must have worked for at least:

  • 10 of the 13 months before the birth or adoption, and
  • 330 hours in that 10 month period.

Can I keep in touch with my workplace?

You can choose to keep in touch with your workplace for up to 10 days during your Parental Leave Pay period. You can't go to work within the first two weeks.

You may be paid your usual wages or salary as well as Parental Leave Pay for any time spent on duty.

When does my Parental Leave Pay stop?

If you choose to return to work before the 18 weeks are up, your Parental Leave Pay will stop. You can transfer any unused Parental Leave Pay to an eligible partner.

Parental Leave Pay is taxable.
