Separation allowance

You may get separation allowance if you spend time away from your dependants for Service reasons.

It makes up for being away from home and any additional costs.

Who can get separation allowance?

You may get separation allowance if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service, or
  • Reserves on Reserve service

You may get separation allowance if you are:

  • a member with dependants (unaccompanied), and
  • on duty away from where your dependants live for more than 60 days

or

  • a member with dependants, and
  • on duty away from where your dependants live for more than 60 days), and
  • not categorised as a member with dependants (unaccompanied), and
  • not eligible for maritime disability allowance or Special Forces disability allowance

or

  • a member with dependants, and
  • eligible for maritime disability allowance or Special Forces disability allowance

or

  • a member with dependants (unaccompanied), and
  • eligible for maritime disability allowance or Special Forces disability allowance.

You may get an annual rate or a discounted annual rate of allowance.

Who can't get separation allowance?

You can't get separation allowance if you are:

  • paid a salary under a determination made under the Remuneration Tribunal
  • a Lieutenant-General or General
  • on leave without pay, or
  • staying in a hospital near where your dependants live.

When can't I get separation allowance?

You can’t get separation allowance if:

  • your period of continuous duty ends
  • you are not a member with dependants for more than 45 days
  • you are not a member with dependants (unaccompanied) for more than 45 days
  • you are at home or away from your place of duty for more than 45 days
  • you are a member with dependants and no longer get maritime disability allowance or Special Forces disability allowance, or
  • you’re on paid leave for more than 45 days.

Can I get other allowances at the same time?

If you get separation allowance, you may get other allowances at the same time.
