Removal on ceasing continuous full-time service

You may get a removal at Defence expense when you cease continuous full-time service.

Who can get a removal on ceasing continuous full-time service?

You may get a removal on ceasing continuous full-time service if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces, or
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service.

When can I get a removal on ceasing continuous full-time service?

You may get a removal of your furniture and effects at Defence expense:

  • before you cease continuous full-time service
  • when you cease continuous full-time service, or
  • after you cease continuous full-time service (no later than 12 months after).

Ceasing continuous full-time service includes all forms of discharge:

  • retirement
  • retrenchment, or
  • on completing a period of engagement.

When can't I get a removal on ceasing continuous full-time service?

You may live in a home but don't get housing assistance. You plan to live in the last posting location you were removed to. You don't get a removal at Defence expense.

You may plan to live at a different location in Australia and you have moved your furniture and effects into storage in that location. You move to another location. You don't get a removal at Defence expense.

You plan to move overseas. You may get a removal from your last removal location to the Australian capital nearest to your departure point. You may get the removal and delivery of your furniture and effects to your overseas shipping agent.

Where can I get a removal to on ceasing continuous full-time service?

You may plan to live in a different location in Australia to where you currently are. You may get a removal from the last posting location you were removed to:

  • your home in Australia where you'll live, or
  • a removalist's store in your posting or new home location.

You may get housing assistance for:

  • a Service residence
  • living-in accommodation, or
  • rent assistance accommodation.

You plan to live in the same location. You may get a removal from your accommodation to:

  • your home in Australia where you'll live, or
  • Defence removalist's store in your posting location.

Where can I get a removal to at Defence expense as a member of the Reserves on continuous full-time service?

If you're a member of the Reserves on continuous full-time service and you were appointed or enlisted in Australia, you may get a removal from your last removal location to:

  • where you lived immediately before you started continuous full-time service, or
  • another destination.

Defence will only pay the amount it would cost to move you back to where you lived immediately before your continuous full-time service.

If you’re a Member of the Reserves on continuous full-time service and you were appointed or enlisted overseas, you may get a removal from your last removal location to:

  • the Australian capital city nearest your departure location
  • your overseas shipping agent, or
  • another location if you intend to stay in Australia.

Defence will only pay the amount it would cost to remove you to the Australian capital city nearest your departure location.

Can I get a removal before ceasing continuous full-time service?

You may get a removal before ceasing continuous full-time service if you received a discharge authority. You may get a removal:

  • during long service leave or other leave taken immediately before ceasing continuous full-time service, or
  • any time during the final 12 months of service.

You may get a removal for compassionate reasons before ceasing continuous full-time service if:

  • your dependant has to move because of illness. You have to have a doctor's written support and Defence Health Service endorsement
  • there is no suitable accommodation in your current posting location
  • there is no suitable secondary or higher education for your child in your current posting location, or
  • there are other exceptional reasons.

You must provide copies of relevant documents. You may remove your furniture and effects before you get your discharge authority. Your removal can be more than 12 months before ceasing.

What happens if I request to cease continuous full-time service?

You may request to cease continuous full-time service. You may get a removal at Defence expense if you have completed:

  • your initial period of engagement or appointment, or
  • 6 years continuous full-time service.

You may also get a removal at Defence expense if you request to cease continuous full-time service because:

  • there are compassionate reasons that can't be resolved
  • these compassionate reasons are beyond your control, and
  • the circumstances started after you enlisted or were appointed, or have got much worse since then.

If you have less than 3 years' continuous full-time service, you may get a removal at Defence expense to:

  • your place of enlistment, or
  • the port of entry to Australia if you were appointed or enlisted overseas.

What happens if I continue to serve after my intended date of ceasing?

You may have had a removal at Defence expense in advance of ceasing continuous full-time service. You serve beyond the date in your discharge authority.

On your next posting you may get a removal at Defence expense:

  • from where you were posted immediately before your removal in advance of ceasing continuous full-time service
  • to the new posting location.

You may get a removal:

  • for your dependants to a personal location where benefits are provided, or
  • in advance of ceasing continuous full-time service if it matches up with a regular removal on posting in your final 12 months.

If your next posting is to a seagoing ship you may get a removal to the same value as a removal from your home port.

Can I get a vehicle removal on ceasing continuous full-time service?

You may get removal for two vehicles and two towable items on ceasing continuous full-time service. This may include the removal of a recreational or hobby vehicle. This is the same as vehicle removal on posting.
