Removal to personal location where benefits are provided

You won’t usually get a removal at Defence expense for your dependants to a personal location. However, you may get a removal at Defence expense if there are special circumstances.

Who can get a removal to a personal location where benefits are provided?

You may get a removal to a personal location where benefits are provided if you are a member of the:

  • Permanent Forces, or
  • Reserves on continuous full-time service.

When can I get a compassionate removal to a personal location with benefits?

You may get a compassionate removal for your dependants to a personal location at Defence expense if:

  • you are a member with dependants
  • you are a member with dependants (unaccompanied)
  • there are substantial compassionate reasons, and
  • the removal is in the interests of the ADF.

What should your decision-maker consider when granting compassionate removal?

Your decision-maker should consider:

  • how serious reasons for the removal are, and
  • what care or help your dependant needs

and whether

  • it is a short-term or long-term situation
  • relocation is the best solution
  • there are personal or Service related issues, or
  • you have applied for discharge and are eligible for a discharge removal.

Who covers the costs of removal to a personal location where benefits are provided?

You may get a removal to a personal location where benefits are provided.

If the removal is for furniture and effects from your residence and storage, Defence may cover up to the full amount it would have cost for a removal to your posting location.

You may have to cover any costs above that amount.

If you don’t need your furniture and effects at the personal location, you may get a removal at Defence expense to storage.

You may have to cover all storage costs.

If you continue to store your furniture and effects after your effective posting date, you may have to cover all storage costs. You can no longer store these items at Defence expense.

When can I get a removal to a personal location with benefits for work or study?

You may get a removal to a personal location for work or study at Defence expense if:

  • your spouse or partner has to move for work or study
  • it is within three months of your posting to a new location
  • you are posted there for six months or more, and
  • the personal location is closer to the new posting location than the old one.

Defence will only cover the same amount as a removal to your new posting location from:

  • where you live in the losing location, and
  • wherever your furniture and effects are in storage at Defence expense.

If the removal costs more than this, you may have to pay the difference. If the removal costs less, you don't get the difference.

What happens if I am posted to a remote location with Army or Air Force?

You may be posted with Army or Air Force to a remote location at Defence expense. You may get a removal for your dependants to a personal location at Defence expense. Defence won't cover more than it would cost for a removal to the remote location.

You may also get a removal as described under 'How much can I get for a removal to a personal location with benefits instead of a remote location'?

What happens if I am posted to a remote location with Navy?

You may be posted with Navy to a remote location for six months or more. You may get a removal for your dependants to a personal location at Defence expense. The cost is limited to the greater of:

  • the costs of removal described under 'How much can I get for a removal to a personal location with benefits instead of a remote location?'
  • a removal of your furniture and effects to your home port, if it isn't in a remote location, and
  • a removal to the remote location, if you're posted to a home port in a remote location.

As a member of the Navy you may elect in writing to remove only your effects to the personal location. Defence may cover the costs for:

  • the removal of your effects to a Service residence in the remote location, and
  • storage for furniture and effects not needed at the personal location.

How much can I get for removal to a personal location with benefits instead of a remote location?

Defence may cover up to the same amount as a removal to the remote location if the items:

  • would have been approved for removal to the remote location, and
  • are removed from your residence and Defence removalist’s storage to the personal location.

You won't get more than the cost of a removal to the remote location. You may have to cover any costs above that amount.

  • excess items at the old location, and
  • other items already in the Defence removalist’s storage when your posting authority is issued.

You won’t have to cover any costs.

Can I get my dependants removed from a personal location to my current posting location?
