ADF Member's Guide

Cease to be a member with dependants

You may cease to be a member with dependants for a number of reasons. Your dependants may move out, your marriage or relationship may break down, or your dependant may die. You may get a removal or storage at Defence expense.

Can I get a removal at Defence expense if I cease to be a member with dependants?

You may cease to be a member with dependants. You may choose removal of your furniture and effects at Defence expense to:

  • a location in Australia where you’ll live after ceasing continuous full-time service, or
  • the nearest storage.

You may elect in writing to get a removal to the nearest storage. Your furniture and effects will be removed to where you’ll live after ceasing continuous full-time service at your request.

You may defer a removal to a location in Australia until:

  • your next posting, or
  • you leave Defence (if the current posting is your last before you leave).

You may choose for your dependant to continue living with you. You may then get a removal on your next posting.

Can I get storage at Defence expense if I cease to be a member with dependants?

You may cease to be a member with dependants. You may get 3 months storage at Defence expense if you:

  • live in a furnished residence with your dependants, and
  • have furniture and effects stored at Defence expense in another location.

If you are a member with dependants (unaccompanied) you may get 3 months storage at Defence expense for items:

  • already in storage at Defence expense, or
  • removed into storage at a location that is not your posting location.

What happens if my dependant dies?

You live in a Service residence with your dependant. Your dependant dies and you are no longer a member with dependants.

You may get a removal of your furniture and effects at Defence expense to:

  • new accommodation in your posting location, or
  • storage in your posting location.

More information about ceasing to be a member with dependants can be found in Chapter 6 Part 5 Division 9.
