ADF Member's Guide

Former medical or dental officer - refresher training

You may have served as a medical or dental officer on a fixed-term appointment. As a former member, you may get help with the costs of refresher training. This may help to better prepare you for work outside Defence.

Who can get help with the costs of refresher training?

You may get help with the costs of refresher training if you:

  • were appointed before graduation
  • were appointed within two years after first registering as a medical or dental practitioner
  • did at least four years continuous full-time service as a medical or dental officer
  • begin a refresher training course within 12 months of leaving the ADF, and
  • have not been appointed as an officer on an indefinite appointment.

When can I get help with the costs of refresher training?

You may get help with the costs of refresher training. This depends on how much:

  • your previous service has prevented you from working as a medical or dental officer outside Defence
  • the refresher training would help fix this.

How much help can I get with the costs of refresher training?

You may get a daily allowance for up to 90 days. You can only get it once.

How much you get when you start your refresher training depends on the difference between the salary you would have got if you were:

  • still in the ADF, and
  • practising outside Defence.

More information about this allowance and specific amounts can be found in Chapter 4 Part 8 Division 3.
