Proliferation Security Initiative
06 April 2006 Exercise PACIFIC PROTECTOR 06 is the second Australian hosted international Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) exercise, following the successful conduct of PACIFIC PROTECTOR 03 in the Coral Sea. The Exercise will reaffirm Australia’s strong support for the PSI. PACIFIC PROTECTOR 06 involved an air interception scenario, together with ground based activities, around Darwin. The purpose of the exercise was to practice how Australian authorities would respond in a coordinated way to a proliferation incident, testing inter-agency and international procedures. The Exercise further demonstrated the resolve of Australia and its international PSI partners to deter and prevent the illicit transfer of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and related materials. Six PSI partner countries participated in the exercise. Twenty-six other countries were observers during the exercise with a view to increasing their understanding of, and support for, the PSI. PACIFIC PROTECTOR 06 includes assets and/or personnel from a large range of Federal and Northern Territory agencies.
