Brent Jeffrey - Patterson Lakes

Brent Jeffrey is helping to keep Australian Defence Force personnel in the Middle East connected with their families and friends in Australian.

The Leading Aircraftman from Patterson Lakes is a Communication and Information System Controller deployed to Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates with Force Communication Unit 9 (FCU-9).

The unit is made up of a team of sailors, soldiers and airmen working to keep Australian forces throughout the Middle East connected with each other and their coalition partners in the battle and mission support spaces and with their families at home.

The deployment is Brent’s first on war-like operations and he has already gained a wealth of experience after just two months into the job.

“This has been a great experience and a real eye opener,” he said.

“There have been so many highlights, from the friendships I have made, to the field training and the opportunities to work with foreign military personnel, it has all been great,” Brent said.

About 2,400 ADF personnel are deployed to the Middle East as part of Operation SLIPPER, and the ability to communicate an extraordinary quantity of information using a raft of radio frequencies, computer networks and other devices is critical to the success of their mission.

“On any given day I am helping to manage several enormous networks which are being used across a huge geographical area,” Brent said.

Brent, who is a former Lyndale Secondary College student, will spend the next four months deployed with the FCU-9, before being reunited with his family in Victoria, including his Mum, Sharryn and Dad, Tony.

“When I think of home, I think of Melbourne’s night life, and the food. When I get back, I’m most looking forward to having a beer and a good laugh with my family,” he said.

Operation SLIPPER is Australia’s military contribution to the international campaign against terrorism, maritime security in the Middle East and countering piracy in the Gulf of Aden.
