Lieutenant Frank Peng is the Deputy Marine Engineer Officer on board HMAS Warramunga on his first nine-month operational deployment to the Middle East.
After migrating from China with his parents when he was 18-years old, Frank lived in Fitzroy and commenced engineering studies at Monash University before ultimately deciding on a career in the Navy.
"The adjustment from China to Australia was hard at first but the country of Australia is beautiful and so are the people who live here," he said.
"I quickly learnt that I could be anything I desired if I was willing to work for it.
"Mechanical Engineering has always been a passion of mine, and the goal of working on one of Australia's warships was something I began to strive for."
Frank has had a taste of what is to come as he has previously served on HMAS Sydney while conducting Operation RESOLUTE, as well as completing a lengthy deployment on Warramunga last year working with foreign navies during Exercises RIMPAC, KAKADU and BERSAMA LIMA.
On the back of these exercises, Frank along with Warramunga's Ships Company went straight into the extensive training and preparation required prior to deploying from Australia.
"The crew of HMAS Warramunga have been working extremely hard over the last twelve months to prepare the ship for our deployment to the Middle East," he said.
"I couldn't ask for a better crew to work with aboard HMAS Warramunga.
"Every member of my team is very professional, hardworking and they take pride in all aspects of their jobs.
"As an Officer I try to set an example of a good work ethic, and I'm constantly learning from the junior and senior members of the Marine Engineering team I work with."
During this deployment Frank will be separated from his wife and two young children.
"Leaving my loved ones for such a long period of time was extremely hard as they are such an important part of my life," he said.
"However knowing that they are extremely proud of me and the work I will be doing on behalf of the RAN and my country is something that will last our life time."
HMAS Warramunga has relieved HMAS Newcastle on Operation MANITOU as Australia's contribution to the Combined Maritime Forces in the Middle East region.
