Directorate of Legal Reserve Management

Practice Management
Reserve and Regional Engagement

Defence Legal (DL) currently employs 387 Active Reserve Legal Officers (RLO), across the three services.

These personnel provide DL with critical, low cost and flexible legal capability. They provide specialist legal advice and other legal support to the command and management of Defence.  They are integral in the running of the military justice system which does not have the capacity to function without them. The RLOs complement the work of permanent ADF legal officers, throughout Australia and on operational deployments overseas.  Many of these RLOs are eminent lawyers in their civilian careers and bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and value to their DL duties. This support improves the effectiveness of operations, the maintenance of military order and discipline, the improvement of policy development and administrative process within Defence.

The Reserve and Regional Management Engagement is administered by the National Practice Manager in consultation with the three single service authorities, category sponsors and Heads of Corps.
