Flying Times

The intent of Exercise Pitch Black 12 is to provide a series of highly realistic training scenarios for participants. This requires a mix of day-time and night-time flying.

Factors such as wind direction will dictate the direction in which aircraft will land and take off from the runway. As such, the following communities may experience brief periods of increased noise during aircraft departures:

  • Fannie Bay, Ludmilla, Coconut Grove and Winnellie for aircraft departing from Darwin’s Runway 29.
  • Coonawarra and Berrimah for aircraft departing from Darwin’s Runway 11.

Members of the public who wish to view aircraft departures can do so at the following locations:

  • Amy Johnson Avenue for aircraft departing Darwin’s Runway 11.

The first week of flying will feature two daylight missions per day for exercise participants. This provides them with orientation of airspace around Darwin, Tindal and the training areas. These missions also assist with Forces Integrated Training, whereby large numbers of multi-national aircraft gain experience flying together.

The second and third week will feature a daylight and night-time mission per weekday. Night-time flying is an essential part of how modern Air Forces do their job.

To minimise the impact of noise disturbance to the Darwin and Katherine local communities, all flying is scheduled to cease by 11pm each night, and is likely to be completed earlier.

No exercise flying will be conducted on weekends, however there may be a requirement for aircraft to fly on other tasks.

The following are scheduled flying times for Exercise Pitch Black 12. Please note that flying times are subject to change due to variables including weather and operational requirements.
