Private Charles Patterson has been rowing competitively since 2014. In this time, he has amassed a range of state and national prizes, including the Australian Men's Champion Coxed 4, in 2017 and 2019.

This is not the first time Charles has contested the Henley Royal Regatta – he represented Sydney Rowing Club in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. He has also raced in the Holland Bekker International Regatta. In 2015, Charles won the Men's Championship Eight at the New Zealand Cambridge Town Regatta on Lake Karapiro.

Following a range of rowing scholarships, Charles was awarded the W J Goulding prize for the most improved rower at Sydney Rowing Club.

Private Patterson is closely involved in the development of the documentary 'the Oarsmen' on the history of the 1919 race. Although this will be Charles' fifth time at the Henley Royal Regatta, he believes it will be the most symbolic by far. As one of the more junior members of the team, and as an Australian Army reservist, Private Patterson is enjoying learning from the diverse experience of the other members of the team.
