Defence commenced an investigation into the nature and extent of PFAS on and around RAAF Base Tindal in March 2017.
In 2016, Defence completed a Preliminary Sampling Program at 12 Defence sites including RAAF Base Tindal. Based on the outcome of this program it was determined that the base will undergo a detailed environmental investigation.
The PFAS environmental investigations are conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999 (NEPM). Visit the Investigation Process page to view a summary of this process.

Defence is working continuously towards the effective monitoring and management of PFAS contamination and continues to engage with industry experts both nationally and internationally to identify the best management options for PFAS throughout Australia. On the 4th of December Defence held a community walk-in session at Katherine to present information gathered during the Detailed Site Investigation and the findings of the Interim Human Health Risk Assessment.
The community walk-in session was followed by a community shopfront from that was held from the 5th to the 6th of December. Community members were invited to attend the community shopfront to talk about the investigation with representatives from Defence, the investigation team and other Government Agencies.

The Department of Defence held a Community Shopfront at Katherine Oasis (Woolworths complex) from Tuesday 10 October until Thursday 12 October 2017.
The Community Shopfront provided Katherine residents with an opportunity to find out more information about the investigation in an informal setting. Representatives from Defence and other government agencies were available at the Shopfront to answer questions.

On 12 April 2017 Defence held a Community Information session in Katherine. The session provided a broad overview of PFAS substances and an update on the environmental investigation on and in the vicinity of RAAF Base Tindal. For further information download the presentation below.
On 22 March 2017 Defence released a notice to the community. The notice explains that preliminary tests identified the presence of PFAS around RAAF Base Tindal. The notice also provides a brief overview of the detailed environmental investigation.
