PFAS Investigation &
Management Program

RAAF Base Pearce

Pearce Investigation Summary

Defence commenced a detailed environmental investigation to better understand the nature and extent of PFAS on and around RAAF Base Pearce in May 2016.

The PFAS environmental investigations are conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999 (NEPM). Visit the Investigation Process page to view a summary of this process.

Defence completed the first stage of the investigation, the Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI), at RAAF Base Pearce in September 2016. The PSI included engagement with local community and key government stakeholders, reviewing site history for AFFF use and identifying PFAS sources, as well as preliminary sampling of bores near the base. Defence commenced the second stage, the Detailed Site Investigation (DSI), in September 2016, which includes:

  • soil samples on base
  • surface water and sediment testing on-base and off-base
  • installing additional shallow and multi-level monitoring bores, and
  • biota sampling from local brooks.
Results from the initial sampling conducted for the DSI, confirmed that a Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment (HHERA) is required. A HHERA is being conducted to provide a better understanding of risks posed to people and the environment.

The most recent community information session was conducted on 18 May 2017.

Defence is working continuously towards the effective monitoring and management of PFAS contamination and continues to engage with industry experts both nationally and internationally to identify the best management options for PFAS throughout Australia. More information on the current activities being undertaken by Defence can be found at the Management Activities page.
