TERRACE BUDDIES
Raymond Terrace and Medowie
We are a support group for Defence partners who live in the Raymond Terrace, Medowie and Williamtown areas, who meet on the first Wednesday of the month, with the location changing between friends’ homes, cafes & parks.
We also have lunches, social events and themed parties, and we try and throw in a ladies & couples night too.
We generally meet during the day, this way it doesn’t take us away from our families, and it’s usually the time that we’d like the company, when the children are at school and hubbies at work.
Children are always welcome, just bring along their favourite toy or blanket, a drink and some snacks.
This group is about support, so you are more than welcome even if you’re children are at school, or even left home.
Please feel free to offer suggestions or to host a get-together, as this is your group, and we try to accommodate everyone. This group isn’t just about numbers though – It is about the get-together’s and getting together is an important part of helping each other out as much as we can
We are on facebook, so look us up at Terrace Buddies, as all of our events are posted on our page, so keep an eye out for them. Sometimes it’s just nice to get out and have a chat, especially with friends that understand.
We’ve moved plenty of times and have had to make friends too.
Please don’t hesitate to let any of us know if we can help make your posting that little bit easier.
Email terracebuddies@bigpond.com or call Bron – 0405 846 245
Hope to see or hear from you soon.

Defence Families Maitland
We are an informal group of Defence spouses located in the Maitland area, in suburbs such as East Maitland, Ashtonfield and Thornton. All of us know how hard it is to have no family support nearby and to find good GP's, shopping, schools, childcare, etc. in a new posting.
Our aim is to provide a support network for defence families in the area through regular meet-ups, dinners, and other social events.
Our members consist of those with young children, those with school aged children and ladies who work or study. Those without children are particularly welcome as it can be sometimes hard to make social contacts in a new posting straight away. So we cater for everyone.

Woodside Defence Families Association
The Woodside Defence Families Association provides vital support to defence families in many ways, offering a variety of activities and events to suit everyone. WDFA are located on the Woodside Army Barracks. It consists of a Community hall which is used for morning tea, scrapbooking, sewing, information sessions, bookclub and other social events. We also have a separate Playgroup and playground area. The main focus for this year will be to provide aid and assistance to those families who have members of the Regiment serving overseas or on long-term courses. We provide a welcoming venue for support, fun and friendship.
Morning Tea: is held every Monday morning during the school term from 9.30am. We often have guest speakers attend such as DCO representatives, local DSTA, as well as the Padre, RSM and CO come along when they can. There are toys for the kids, and this is a great opportunity to meet other defence partners over a hot cuppa.
Playgroup: is on every Wednesday morning from 9.30am during school term. There are lots of toys , books and puzzles. We have a different craft activity for the children each week as well as outdoor play. Our new playground is fantastic and the cubby house if popular too. Kids of all ages are invited and we have facilities for even the little ones, including two high chairs and bouncers.
Book Club: Each month we read a different book suggested by the local library. We then get together to discuss the book over dinner. Everyone brings a plate to share.
Family Wellbeing: Our committee members welcome families to the Woodside area with a food basket and information pack. The pack includes tea, coffee, biscuits, fruit, local council information, local Hills magazine, DCO & WDFA newsletter. Many great friendships have been formed from this initial greeting.
Walking Group / Keep Fit: Many of the members get together for a walk regularly and also attend the local fitness group. Contact Jodie for times and more details.
Scrapbooking: is held twice a month, one being a Thursday session and the other is a Sunday session. Upcoming dates are available in our newsletter and on our website.
Sewing: meets each fortnight on Thursday nights from 6 – 9pm. We have different “theme nights”, or you can just come along and work on your own project.
In addition to our regular events, we offer a variety of social outings suggested by our members. Activities include movie nights, progressive dinners, family pizza night / sausage sizzle. We offer family days to involve husbands and children, giving an opportunity for everyone to get together. We also have a Christmas party which includes a bouncy castle, face painting and Santa comes to visit.

North Australia Area Family Support Committee Inc
NAAFSC Inc is a not-for-profit Defence community group, located in Darwin, NT. The committee manages the Coonawarra Community House situated on Defence Establishment Berrimah.
The FSFP funding provided by the Defence Community Organization largely covers the NAAFSC operational budget. We believe a programs success and longevity relies heavily on the programs being self funding and affordable to our families. While our more successful programs help subsidise other programs when necessary.
NAAFSC Activities - The activities are a great way for defence members, spouses, parents and children to meet others families. Often families posted to Darwin are a long way from their support network so rely on other people in similar situations for support.
Learn to swim – Classes are available for children from 6 weeks to teenagers. We start with Mums/Dads & Bubs classes all the way up to the advanced swimmers who are perfecting their technique. Classes start at $10 for half hour lesson and are taught in the Base Pool by a qualified Swimming Instructor. Classes are very popular and are a great way to meet other people.
Aqua Aerobics – This is a great program for members and their partners to meet new people get some exercise and have a good time. Classes are run by a qualified Aqua Aerobics instructor, at the DEB Base pool.
Pilates – Pilates classes have proven very popular with both men and women. These classes are a great way to stay fit and meet people. Classes are run in the air-conditioned DEB Gym, with a qualified Pilates Instructor.
Playgroup – Another way to meet other Defence members/spouses, while letting the children enjoy the fabulous outdoor play environment at the Coonawarra Community House. Playgroup is on Mondays from 9am to 11am. Children from newborn to 5 year olds are catered for. Playgroup is also an excellent way of finding out what is going on for Defence families around Darwin.
Other Activities - We have previously held Blue light Disco’s, Children’s Tennis lessons, Dance classes, information sessions for parents and special events for things like Mothers Day. We regularly hold coffee mornings and walking groups and are open to new ideas from our community.

The Top Ender Magazine
The Top Ender is a professional publication put together for all Defence families in Darwin. It is used to keep families informed in many different areas including groups such as the Defence Community Organisation (DCO) and the different community groups on the four bases. There are stories written about things people have done in Darwin and to let others know what is on at various times of the year. As those that have spent time in the top end know, we have two seasons, wet and dry, so what activities are on depends greatly on what time of year it is.
The Top Ender is run mainly by voluntary staff. We are a Bi-monthly publication and have a committee of volunteers as well as the occasional volunteer. We also have two paid positions, our desktop publisher and our administrative assistant. We rely mainly on funding each year but subsidise that with money from advertisers.
Many families rely on the Top Ender for all types of information, for example sporting clubs for their kids or themselves, hairdressers or the local Avon lady. As many of you know moving to a new place, one of the biggest challenges is finding out where some of these places are. That’s why the Top Ender plays an integral role in living in the top end.
The Top Ender is always on the lookout for stories, or pictures and even classifieds. There is something in there for all ages. We try to cater for the kids, there are recipes for those that love to cook and even things for the big boys. At different times of the year we include special information such as cyclone season or tax time.
In the end the Top Ender is there for the families, making their time in the top end that much nicer.
