Former Defence Force personnel have skills and capabilities that are in high demand in the civilian workforce. They are strong leaders, resilient, motivated and experienced. They have demonstrated loyalty, courage and commitment and are proven problem-solvers.
The range of qualities acquired by ADF members through their military service and training are valuable to civilian employers. Their talents are easily transferable between military and civilian life and include:
Many former members continue to live by core Defence values such as honesty, honour, initiative, integrity, respect and teamwork. These key qualities are valued in any workplace.
Military personnel pride themselves on their responsiveness, problem-solving skills, teamwork and ability to work in high-pressure environments. Their experience in the military may also have led to the development of leadership skills and the ability to rapidly adapt to new technologies.
Many former members will have acquired professional or trade qualifications that are recognised in the civilian workforce, for example mechanics, health professionals, carpenters and drivers.
The Prime Minister's Veterans' Employment Program, aims to make it easier for businesses to recruit former Defence personnel and for industry to reap the benefits of their skills and professional expertise.
Launched on 17 November 2016, the program gathered Ministers, Defence leaders, business leaders and ex-service organisations, Defence leadership and Government to make a renewed commitment to better recognise the value of our veterans after their ADF service has ended.Read more: ADF Transtion
