Imagery

The Defence Imagery website is a public-facing portal used to publish official photographs and videos. All imagery is subject to Commonwealth of Australia copyright.

Imagery is published on Defence official online channels, including social media, YouTube, and all other Defence platforms, for the primary purpose of promoting Defence activities to the wider public.

Personal and non-commercial use

For personal and non-commercial use, Defence imagery may be downloaded from the Defence Imagery website to be displayed, printed and reproduced in unaltered form, under a Creative Commons (CC) licence (CC BY-NC-ND) or as permitted under the Copyright Act 1968.

Bona fide media organisations are permitted to use Defence imagery for the purpose of reporting news without seeking individual permission, providing they credit their source of the content.

Commercial use

For Defence imagery to be used by an external organisation, including for commercial, industry, non-profit and government use, Defence will consider requests to licence the imagery for purposes that align with Defence interests and satisfies the criteria.

External copyright requests are decided on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the Brand Managers for each Service.

Where approved, Defence will issue a limited copyright licence for the defined use of the imagery.

Copyright requests for commercial use can be submitted via the following:

  • Defence Imagery website: by using the Copyright application form linked within each imagery.
  • Sending an email to imagery.copyright@defence.gov.au, and providing:
    • Image links to the specific video and imagery filenames published in the Defence Imagery gallery (found within the media asset's metadata).
