Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID)

CWID, formerly known as the Joint Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (JWID), is an annual US initiative in which Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and the countries of NATO are invited to participate. CWID explores Command, Control, Communications, and Computers, and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) technologies, concepts and procedures in a simulated operational context.

The Australian Defence Force participates in the initiative in order to pursue developments in combined, coalition and joint C4ISR capabilities and interoperability.

CWID executes on the Combined Federated Battle Laboratory network (CFBL Net), which arose out of the JWID initiative. The CFBL is a low risk environment on which experiments and simulations - such as CWID - are conducted as well as assisting in the development and research of new technologies.

Australia's ongoing commitment to CWID is based on the following goals:

  • CWID provides an opportunity for Defence and industry to explore and demonstrate new and evolving C4ISR concepts and capabilities in a simulated operational environment.

  • CWID assists the Defence operational community to more clearly articulate capability user requirements, through increased awareness and understanding of emerging concepts and technologies.

  • CWID allows Australia to engage with participating nations in combined and coalition interoperability initiatives and to influence the development of the evolving Combined Information Environment.

  • CWID enables Australia to develop knowledge and expertise in networking and C4ISR systems engineering in a combined and coalition environment.

The overarching purpose of CWID is to inform the capability development process.
