Led by the Chief Information Officer, the Chief Information Officer Group's divisions and program areas work collectively to deliver a dependable, secure and integrated information environment to support Defence business and military operations.
The CIOG consists of four main areas:
- the Chief Technology Officer Division ;
- the Information and Communications Technology Development Division ;
- the Information and Communications Technology Operations Division ;
- the Information and Communications Technology Reform Division and,
The Chief Technology Officer Division (CTOD) is responsible for the Defence ICT architecture and delivering Information and Communications Technology (ICT) systems and applications in line with Defence's corporate goals and strategies. The CTO also provides guidance and support to defence on projects of strategic significance, promoting technology awareness and competence throughout the organisation and ensuring applications are built and integrated in line with CIOG's architecture for applications, Infrastructure and information.

Software Contract Compliance Branch (SCCB)
The Information and Communications Technology Development Division (ICTDD) is responsible for the architectural design, development and third level support of the Defence Information Environment. ICTDD delivers to internal and external customer requirements through program and project management.

The Information and Communications Technology Operations Division (ICTOD) / J6 is the responsible for delivering the Defence Information Environment as a global end to end capability including the provision of satellite communications, electromagnetic spectrum and networks to support military operations. The Head of the Division is the principal strategic adviser (Strategic J6) to the Chief of Defence Force and Commander Joint Operations on communications and information systems and electromagnetic spectrum.

ICT Policy and Plans Branch (ICTPPB)
The Information and Communications Technology Reform Division (ICTRD) is responsible for developing and implementing the Defence-wide ICT Reform Program to deliver target cash savings and non-cash outcomes within agreed investment budget. Managing Defence-wide ICT Reform stakeholders to enable them to achieve their Reform outcomes through ICT . Managing relationships with central agencies and AGIMO for ICT Reform. Reporting to CIO, DIEC, ICT Stream Governance Committee on the ICT Reform Program. Acting as Senior Responsible Officer for centralised projects as allocated by the CIO, including: –Other Groups/Services/DMO . Managing and executing Defence-wide ICT Reform activities for the CIO.
