Unit History
Army Headquarters (AHQ) Signals Regiment
The history of 138 Sig Sqn dates back to 1947 when two units, LHQ Heavy wireless and LHQ Signals were united into a single entity "AHQ Signals".
AHQ Signals became 403 Sig Regt, which in 1965 was renamed 6 Sig Regt. The unit occupied many sites in and around Melbourne including Park Orchards, Victoria Barracks, Grosvenor and Albert Part before moving to Simpson Barracks in March 1960.
In 1991, Defence Strategic Communications underwent significant change with the establishment of the Defence Integrated Secure Communication Network (DISCON). DISCON was designed to take Strategic Communications into the 21st century with a dependence on satellite and line for the connection of switching centres and subscribers.
This move away from HF radio resulted in the closure of 6 Signal Regiment facilities at Diggers Rest and Rockbank. However the titles of 137 and 138 Signal Squadrons fell into disuse, the unit becoming generally named 6 Signal Regiment.
6 Sig Regt officially closed, with one of her Squadrons, 137 Sig Sqn, being disbanded, on 31 Dec 94.
