The 8th Brigade - 2nd Division The Army Reserve in Sydney and Northern New South Wales

The 8th Brigade is one of five Brigades within the 2nd Division ('2 Div'), which is one of 2 Divisions in the Australian Army. 8th Brigade, as a combined-arms formation, includes units and personnel from all Corps of the Army including Armoured, Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, Signals and Ordinance (Supply).

The 2nd Division (2 Div)

2 Div, which has its Headquarters in Sydney, has Brigades in NSW, ACT, Victoria, WA, SA and Tasmania. The five brigades in 2 Div contain most of the Australian Army's Part-Time elements (usually referred to as the Army Reserve). Other part-time units located in Qld and NT are integrated within 1st Division (1 Div) units which contains the bulk of the Full-time Army (usually referred to as the Regular Army).

The 8th Brigade (8 Bde)

8 Bde, as one of 2 Div's part-time formations, has sub-units spread all over NSW - stretching from Sydney in the South to Tweed Heads in Northern NSW. In between these points there are Brigade Sub-Units located in most major towns and population centres.

Though the brigade is a part-time formation, it units are organised from their respective headquarters which are staffed by both full-time and part-time officers and soldiers. This headquarter (HQ) unit of 8th Brigade - HQ 8 Bde - is responsibile for the overall planning and co-ordination of the Brigade's activities. This includes both the annual Combined Arms Training Activity (CATA) - which involves all Brigade Units operating as a combined arms Brigade - and the annual Command Post Exercise (CPX) and Brigade TEWT (Tactical Exercise Without Troops) - which exercises the tactical and command and control skills of the headquarter elements of each of the Brigade's Sub Units.
