Lieutenant Colonel Craig Dennis Furini, CSC
Commanding Officer 8th/12th Medium Regiment


Craig Furini was born and raised in Sydney. After completing his secondary education at Northholm Grammar School, he attended the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Royal Military College. He graduated in 1990 into the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery. His initial appointments were in 8th/12th Medium Regiment at Holsworthy as a Section Commander, Gun Position Officer and Regimental Survey Officer.

Other Regimental appointments have included time as a Forward Observer with 4th Field Regiment and 26 Regiment (SP) Royal Artillery. In addition, in 1995 he attended the Gunnery Staff Course (Field) at the Royal School of Artillery, which resulted in him being posted, on return to Australia, as an Instructor-in-Gunnery at the School of Artillery in Manly. This posting also included a six month attachment to the Directorate of Artillery as the Staff Officer Grade Two Operations. In 2000-2001 he was the Battery Commander of 103rd Medium Battery in Darwin, which included a deployment to East Timor in support of 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.

Lieutenant Colonel Furini has also served as a Signals Troop Commander on operations with the Force Communications Unit in Cambodia. In 1998-1999 he was a Staff Officer Operations on Headquarters 1st Brigade in Darwin. He attended the RAAC Regimental Officers Advanced Course and was in involved with the Restructuring of Army trial and implementing the changes to 1st Brigade's readiness notice. He has also served within the technical intelligence community in the UK and Australia. In 2003-2004 he was posted to the British Defence Intelligence Service in London as their threat artillery and AAA analyst, which included an operational tour in Iraq. He subsequently served in the Defence Intelligence Organisation heading a small team of land technical intelligence analysts. In this appointment he was heavily involved in supporting operations, especially in the area of improvised explosive devices, and was instrumental in establishing the ADF Counter IED Task Force. For his work in DIO and the UK DIS he was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross.

Lieutenant Colonel Furini is a graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Australian Command and Staff College where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Management (Defence Studies) respectively.

Craig and his wife, Robynne have Two sons and they enjoy theatre, travel and gardening. Craig enjoys most sports with a particular interest in sailing, cricket, tennis and football.

RSM Biography



WO1 PETER SIMIC
Warrant Officer Class One Peter Simic
RSM 8th/12th Medium Regiment

WO1 Simic enlisted in the ARA on the 1st March 1977, on completion of Recruit and Initial Employment Training he was posted to 8th /12th Medium Regiment, RAA, initially as a Gun Number. WO1 Simic served with the 103rd Medium Battery from 1977 to 1983. During his time in 8th /12th Medium Regiment, WO1 Simic was cross-trained and employed as a Signaller, Driver and OPCP Grade one and two and was subsequently promoted from Gunner through to Sergeant in the same Regiment.

In Sep 83, WO1 Simic was posted to the 2nd Army Recruiting Unit in Sydney (2ARU). In 2ARU WO1 Simic was employed in the enlistment section, being responsible for female general entry and later as a field recruiter.

In Oct 85, WO1 Simic returned to 8th /12th Medium Regiment where he remained until Dec 92. During this time WO1 Simic was employed as a Forward Observer's Assistant, Command Post Sergeant, Battery Commander's Assistant, Operations Sergeant and Gun Sergeant.

In Dec 92 WO1 Simic was posted to the School of Artillery. He was employed as an Instructor in the Regimental Training Wing until Dec 94 when he was promoted to WO2 with effect 25 Jan 95. He, however, remained at the School of Artillery until Dec 96 and was employed as a Sergeant Major Instructor in Gunnery. In Jun 96 WO1 Simic deployed to United Kingdom on Exercise Long Look. On his return to Australia at the end of 96 he was posted back to 8th /12th Medium Regiment.

WO1 Simic remained in 8th/12th Medium Regiment until Dec 99. During the next three years he was employed as the Battery Guide of A Field Battery. In Oct 99 WO1 Simic deployed to East Timor as part of INTERFET and in late Dec 99 he returned to Australia on posting to 1st Field Regiment where he was employed as the Regimental Signals Supervisor and Battery Sergeant Major of Headquarter Battery.

In Jan 03 WO1 Simic was posted to the Australian Defence Force Academy and for the next two years was employed as the Squadron Sergeant Major of Army Bravo Squadron, third year Army Officer Cadets.

In Jan 05 WO1 Simic was posted to the Headquarters Combat Arms Training Centre as the Sergeant Major Offensive Support in the Royal Australian Artillery Trade and Policy Cell, and on 16 Jan 06 WO1 Simic was appointed the Regimental Sergeant Major 23rd Field Regiment

WO1 Simic was appointed the Regimental Sergeant Major of 8th/12th Medium Regiment with effect 30 Apr 07.
