Butterworth Blokes

Malaysia Bound

Our three part-time soldiers on deployment have temporarily become members of Rifle Company Butterworth, a regular rotation of Australian military personnel which supports the Australian presence at Butterworth air base and conducts regular exercises with the Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand Defence Forces. The soldiers, who are in Malaysia for three months, are participating in bilateral exercises while overseas. During their stay they will have the opportunity to work with Malaysian soldiers and learn skills in weaponry, communications and navigation. They will also develop junior leadership and to focus on mastering the cultural and linguistic skills that the modern soldiers require in today's operating environment."

Battery Guide

WO2 S.E. Morrow

Warrant Officer Class Two Stephen Morrow enlisted into the Australian Army Reserve on 6 September 1986 and on completion of his recruit training was allotted to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. On marching out, he was posted to the 16th Battalion the Royal Western Australian Regiment. During his time in the Battalion he served initially with Bravo Company and subsequently Support Company, as an assault pioneer. He was promoted to LCPL on 30 May 1989. On 14 March 1990, LCPL Morrow transferred to the Royal Australian Artillery and was posted to 7 Field Battery, 3rd Field Regiment.

Over the period 1990 to 2001, WO2 Morrow became the stalwart of the gun line, rising through the ranks from detachment member, detachment second-in-command, and then detachment commander. WO2 Morrow served as the detachment commander of the senior gun in the Battery for eight years. His knowledge of M2A2 technical gunnery and his sage advice on the deployment and employment of the M2A2 Howitzer is second to none. By maintaining and demanding the highest technical standards of himself, he was able to constantly set an example for all to emulate.

In January 2002, WO2 Morrow left the guns to be employed in the critical role of Command Post Sergeant and, due to shortages in qualified Artillery Officers at the time, took on the added responsibility of acting Gun Position Officer. With the minimum of delay WO2 Morrow moulded a cohesive and technically strong command post that became the technical linchpin between the gun line and the forward observation teams. During this time he was also appointed the Officer In Charge of the Battery Recruiting Section, which had been struggling in previous years. In the same timely and energetic fashion, WO2 Morrow set about developing and implementing a robust recruiting strategy for the Battery that would not only fix the immediate problems but would form the basis for future recruiting expansion and development. By December 2002 the Command Post and Recruiting Section were the leading teams within the Battery.

In January 2003, WO2 Morrow handed over the Recruiting Section, having doubled the recruiting result from the previous year and having implemented a sound long term recruiting strategy. Since January 2003, WO2 Morrow has remained double hatted as both the Command Post Sergeant and taking on the new position of Operations Sergeant for the Battery. Again, in his new role as Operations Sergeant, his energetic, tireless and meticulous work ethic has allowed him to single handedly improve the planning, development and execution of operations procedures and field exercises in the Battery.

In 2007 he is now the Battery Guide as he endeavours to bring all of his valued knowledge and experience to the difficult gunnery role.

His superiors, peers and subordinates alike hold WO2 Morrow's personal example, tireless dedication to duty and professional approach to all aspects of military service in the highest regard. His personal efforts and tireless energy over the past fourteen years have contributed most significantly to the success that 7 Field Battery is currently experiencing.
