Top of Welcome Introduction

Welcome to the 1st/15th Royal New South Wales Lancers website. The Lancers is one of the oldest military units in the Australian Army with twenty one battle honours extending back to the Boer War.

Over the last one hundred and twenty two years the Regiment has been instrumental in the evolution of the Australian Cavalryman. The Regiment has served in the saddle, in scout and gun carriers, in heavy armour and the M113A1 fleets.

2007 will see the Regiment in its one hundred and twenty second year and in its second year as a Light Cavalry Regiment. Like all Army Reserve Armoured Corps Units, the Regiment has transitioned to the Light Cavalry as part of the Hardened and Networked Army concept.

This next generation of Cavalrymen will carry our proud tradition forward in the 21st century. Our new Light Cavalry Patrol Vehicles and state of the art equipment makes us one of the Army Reserves premier units; our Cavalry Scouts are the eyes and ears of the 5th Brigade.

Our new role and equipment will allow the Regiment to undertake more varied training and to operate in a much wider range of complex war fighting environments.

The role of Light Cavalry is to locate the enemy through the conduct of limited; offensive, defensive, reconnaissance and surveillance and security operations. Light Cavalry operations enables supported commanders to manoeuvre their force with enhanced security and to preserve combat power until it can be employed decisively.

Integral to the Light Cavalry is the Cavalry Scout capability which is well suited to the Regiment's mission, that remains focussed on supporting the Reserve Response Force and High Readiness Reserve constructs within the 5th Brigade.

Being a member of Australia's Defence Forces either a full or part time is a serious commitment that should not be taken lightly. It demands the highest of physical, moral and mental standards. For anyone wanting a fulfilling and challenging career in the Army Reserve, the 1st/15th Royal New South Wales Lancers is a unit you should consider.

For more information please contact our Unit Recruiting Officer, Sergeant Chris Harvey on (02) 9635 7822 from 0800 to 1600 hours daily.

2006 has been a year of significant change for the Regiment and the Reserve. Like all other RAAC Reserve units, the Lancers have been very busy conducting courses to qualify our soldiers into the new Light Cavalry role.

Since 1885 our unit has changed roles no less than eight times; in 2006 we have again been part of history making times by evolving into a Light Cavalry Regiment.

We successfully completed our M113A1 hand-back in early July and our new vehicle delivery is just about complete. Our new vehicle fleet offers us opportunities to reduce maintenance and focus our precious training time on our core business of close reconnaissance.

Our training team has done an exceptional job in the planning, conduct and execution of our Light Cavalry and associated vehicle courses throughout 2006. Special recognition must go to Warrant Officer Dale Wallace, whose passion and drive set the conditions for a very successful training year. In 2007 Warrant Officer Wallace moves to 1st Armoured Regiment to fulfil his long held ambition as the Squadron Sergeant Major of B Squadron.

Within the 5th Brigade, the Ready Response Force (RRF) remains the number one priority and the Lancers continue to support the RRF with a range of trades. As the High Readiness Reserve is stood up over the next two years we again stand ready to contribute to this vitally important function as part of being a "Ready and Relevant Reserve".

We have also had a number of individuals fulfilling operational roles within OP CATALYST and ANODE. All of our deployed members have returned safely with a better understanding of Coalition and peacekeeping operations - again to the benefit of the unit.

Musician Lincoln Quillam.won his fourth successive ADF Snowboarding National Championship and contributed to a number of other team victories. Our famous Lancer Band has continued to provide excellent musical support to wide range of activities across New South Wales and beyond, including supporting the Corps Dinner in March this year.

The training, sustainment and retention of our soldiers has never been more important. In 2006 we have had a number of soldiers transition to the regular forces. While some view this as a loss to the reserve it is important to understand this is a very important gain to the wider Army.

Our recruiting goes from strength to strength with our Unit Recruiting Team doing a fantastic job in consistently exceeding its targets. Sergeant Chris Harvey, in particular, deserves special recognition for his outstanding efforts.

Our Honorary Colonel, Major General Warren Glenny, AO RFD ED has extended his tenure and will remain in place for the foreseeable future. Major General Glenny's and is often quoted speech remains as relevant as it ever has:

"A regiment is not solely the men who presently comprise its strength. It is an entity stretching back in time to its beginnings. It is all the men who have served in its ranks, with their traditions and achievements. The serving unit, like the tip of an iceberg, may be the only part you see, but underneath, supporting it, there is a great deal more."

We look forward to facing and defeating the challenges that 2007 brings and beyond in our ever changing threat environment.
