Doomadgee

Doomadgee Map
The township of Doomadgee sits about 100 kilometers from the coast on the edge of the Nicholson River in "gulf country". As with most northern towns, there are two main seasons, wet and dry.

Originally founded by the Christian Brethren on the coast, the township was relocated due to cyclones and availibility of fresh water. Now Doomadgee is a self governing community under the Deed of Grant in Trust.

The township has a population of between 1500-2000 people with well established infrastructure. There is an all-weather, surfaced airstrip, which provides a means of resupply when the river floods. During the wet season floods cut off the town for up to 3 months.

There are many well-established public services including a pre-school, a combined primary/high school up to year 10, medical centre, police, sporting ground, and women's shelter. The closest major centres are Burketown, about 100 kilometres to the East, and Mount Isa, about 600 kilometres to the South. The Northern Territory border is about 100 kilometres to the West.
