Defence Aircraft Noise Website

Defence has an honest and open approach about the noise experienced by residents living near RAAF bases.  As part of this approach, Defence maintains a comprehensive website providing a range of aircraft noise information at

The Defence aircraft noise website contains a range of information about Defence flying operations, aircraft noise forecasts and noise monitoring activities.

Information about flight paths, military engines, night flying and training is also available.

2011 Noise and Flight Path Monitoring System

In 2011 Defence installed a Noise and Flight Path Monitoring System to record and report flying activity and aircraft noise in the Darwin region. The system was decommissioned after twelve months, however Defence conducted a short term monitoring program during Exercise Pitch Black 12.

F-35A Lightning II Environmental Impact Statement

The F-35A Lightning II (F-35A) will be Australia's next generation air combat fighter. The F-35A will be based at RAAF Bases Williamtown and Tindal, and will visit RAAF Base Darwin for operations and staging.

Department of Infrastructure guidance material

In 2006 the Department of Infrastructure (then known as the Department of Transport and Regional Services) produced a booklet designed to help airports and communities talk about aircraft noise. While aimed at airport operators, it includes useful information on the ANEF system and "Number above" noise contour maps.

Standards Australia - 2016 guidance handbook

Standards Australia has prepared a handbook to guide airports on the types of information that should be produced to best inform local residents about noise. The information contained in this handbook explains different aircraft noise metrics, and provides recommendations on how to use them.

Aircraft Noise Ombudsman

In January 2015 Defence and the Aircraft Noise Ombudsman signed a Memorandum of Understanding to extend the Ombudsman's role to provide an independent complaints and review mechanism for Defence.

The Aircraft Noise Ombudsman website provides a range of information about aircraft noise, including complaint reports and statistics.

Darwin Community Aviation Consultation Group

Darwin International Airport has established a local Community Aviation Consultation Group to help facilitate greater community consultation, particularly on planning and development activities on the airport.
