Darwin 2042 Australian Noise Exposure Forecast

The Department of Defence has prepared a new Australian Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) for RAAF Base Darwin, Darwin International Airport and Robertson Barracks for the year 2042. The new ANEF was being prepared to help Darwin International Airport and has now been endorsed.

The new map has been produced to meet Airports Act (1996) requirements for the next Darwin International Airport Master Plan and provides residents, landowners and land planning agencies with updated information about aircraft noise in Darwin.

The new 2042 ANEF will replace the old 2030 forecast and includes both military and civil aviation activity. A scanned copy of the ANEF is available here [JPEG, 18.0 MB] or here [PDF, 5.67MB]

Key Features of the new forecast

The new 2042 forecast considers:

  • Australian military activity and visiting air forces.
  • A slightly increased number of military fast jet movements.
  • A small increase in intermittent flying by large RAAF aircraft, such as the C17A Globemaster and the new P8A Poseidon.
  • New flight paths designed by Air Traffic Control to direct most helicopters over industrial land.
  • Darwin International Airport expectations that civilian air traffic will remain generally similar, but with an increased use of larger aircraft, and higher numbers of international and night time flights.

When these changes were modelled using specialist software it resulted in a slight overall narrowing in ANEF contours compared to the old forecast, however, there are changes to the east and west of RAAF Base Darwin under the main flight path. Other types of information about aircraft noise can be found here.

Major Military Exercises

Major military exercises are not included in the forecast as these vary from year to year and are difficult to predict so far in advance.
