Rugby Club

The Australian Defence Force Academy Rugby Club (ARC) was formed in the Academy’s foundation year, 1986, and has participated in the local ACT competition ever since. Initially, with four first grade men’s teams and two U18 teams the club has evolved to a men’s 1st XV, a men’s 2nd XV and a women’s open team whom all call Dowsett field home.

The ARC 1st XV has been a fierce contender in the Monaro 1st Division tournament, which consists of 6 clubs within the Canberra and surrounding region including RMC, Cooma, Hall, Goulburn and Yass. As the highest level of rugby within the club, this is the team that everyone aspires to. The ARC 1st XV were minor premiers in 2013, however just fell short of a grand final appearance.

In 1998 a significant change to the ARC was made, where the first ever women’s team fielded. This achievement was pivotal for the overall success of the club and in their initial year the women won 6 out of their 16 games. The women’s rugby team is gaining a strong reputation in the local rugby community, with several members in the past being selected to play at the service and international level.

During the rugby season, the ARC train twice a week with competition games being played on Saturday’s. The ARC remains and will continue to be one of the most competitive and prestigious A grade sports club within the Academy. The ARC is based on the values of mateship, pride, professionalism and loyalty. These values drive every individual and each team to be successful competitors both on and off the rugby field.
