The ADFA Band is the place to go for all things musical at the Academy. Under the direction of the Academy Bandmaster and the officer cadets and midshipmen on the Band Committee, the Band provides opportunities for cadets to play a variety of instruments in a whole range of settings.
The Band caters for musicians of many tastes, with various smaller groups including the Jazz Band, the String Ensemble and the a cappella singers, in addition to the main marching band consisting of the combined Band, Pipes and Drums which provides music for all ADFA parades. The ADFA Band is unique within the ADF as it is formed almost entirely by volunteer undergraduates, and is also the only military unit in Australia that combines Pipes and Band on a continuous basis.
Throughout the year, the Band plays at functions around the country, including military dining-in nights, the ADFA Open Day and ANZAC Day services. The Band is an important part of the Academy’s public image, and this has recently been bolstered by the introduction of the new ADFA tartan kilts, worn by pipers on parade.
