Australian Army Catering Corps


	The efficiency of the Catering Corps has a direct influence on the morale and well-being of the combat soldier. Catering soldiers prepare, cook and serve meals both in the field, using high capacity field kitchens, and in Army establishments. High standards are essential and members of the Corps take a great deal of pride in the hygienic preparation of nutritious meals. Soldiers of the Corps may be either cooks or stewards with the possibility of advancing through the ranks to positions of responsibility such as shift, mess and catering supervisors.

The term sergeant dates back centuries to the English feudal system when landowners used serfs from the fields to fight battles. The sons and personal servants of the landowners were also employed but as a mark of respect they were put in charge of the serfs and others with a lesser station in life. These sons and servants became known as 'servientes', from the Latin 'to serve'. In time the term became sergeant.
