Duntroon Society

Background
The Duntroon Society was formed on the 27th June 1980 by the then Commandant of RMC, MAJGEN A.L. Morrison, AO, DSO, MBE. The Society had the original aim of providing an alumni organisation for RMC graduates and staff. With the centralisation of all officer training at RMC, the Society has broadened its membership to include graduates, staff and friends of all previous officer training institutions as well as RMC.

Objectives
The objectives of the Society are:

  • To enable its members to maintain an informal association with RMC;
  • To keep contact with its members through a regular newsletter;
  • To foster social contact among its members; and
  • To support RMC in such ways as the Commandant may consider appropriate.

Membership
There are three classes of membership of the Society:

Ordinary Membership - Is open to graduates of RMC, OCS, OTU and WRAAC OCS; former cadets and officer candidates honourably discharged from those establishments; serving and retired officers of the Regular and Reserve Defence Forces of Australia; members and former members of the military and civilian staffs of Australian officer training establishments; widows and widowers of the aforementioned; other persons who wish to join the Society and are recommended by a current member.

Honorary Membership - May be granted to any person at the discretion of the Executive Council.

Life Membership - May be granted, under the current Charter, at the discretion of the Executive Council solely in recognition of a member's contribution to the Society.

Current membership rates are $20.00 per year and $90.00 for five years.

An application form for membership with the Duntroon Society is available here. Note: Applications for membership of the NZ Branch should be sent to the NZ Secretary/ Treasurer (currently Tom Aldridge). The NZ subscription rates are $100 for 5 years membership.

Organisation
The Society publishes two newsletters each year for its members. The branches are responsible for organising their own local activities, which usually include luncheons, dinners with guest speakers, and social outings.

The Society is governed by an Executive Council, whose members are the Commandant of RMC (as President), one representative from each of the branches, and three other persons appointed by the President

There are branches in all the Australian States, the ACT and New Zealand. The Executive Council may create new branches in Australia or overseas when circumstances warrant it.

Society Activities
The Society is an association of individuals, grouped for convenience into branches and operating under the authority of the governing body to support the objectives of the Society.

An Annual Postal Golf competition between branches is held annually. Rules etc are available from the current national organizer, Frank Lehman, who may be contacted at (02) 62825401 or lehman@netspeed.com.au The Society actively supports the College through providing guides for tours of Duntroon and other appropriate support.

The Society is currently developing a Centenary Gift for the College. Council has agreed to engage Dr Ross Bastiaan to produce a bronze relief plaque. Dr Bastiaan has waived his own fee but the plaque and plinth will cost in the order of $10,000 which we hope to raise by individual donation.
